Ashley Westphal
Associate Clinical Director
MEd
I am a dedicated education specialist with extensive expertise in psycho-educational assessments, literacy development, and executive functioning. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of British Columbia and a Master of Education in Educational Psychology, specializing in Special Education, from the University of Victoria. Additionally, I am certified at both the classroom and Associate levels in the Orton-Gillingham approach, equipping me to provide individualized support for students with reading disabilities. Central to my work is a commitment to inclusion, neurodiversity, and neuro-affirming practices. I believe in fostering equitable access to education for all learners, and these values guide my clinical practice. My professional journey is deeply rooted in my personal experience with Autism and ADHD. My 17-year-old son’s diagnosis inspired me to become an advocate for those unable to advocate for themselves and motivated me to dedicate my education to helping neurodivergent learners. Having navigated the challenges and triumphs of supporting a child with Autism and ADHD, I understand the importance of meaningful support for both children and their families. This lived experience informs my practice and strengthens my ability to connect with families on a personal level. Psycho-educational assessments are a cornerstone of my expertise. I have extensive experience conducting comprehensive evaluations of cognitive abilities, academic achievement, executive functioning, and behavioral challenges. These assessments identify learning disabilities, ADHD, and other developmental needs, providing the foundation for personalized learning plans. I focus on delivering precise, practical results that empower families and educators to implement effective strategies for student success. During my Master’s apprenticeship, I conducted in-depth assessments in school settings to better understand the connection between literacy development and executive functioning. This hands-on experience refined my skills in data collection, interpretation, and reporting, ensuring that my evaluations are insightful and beneficial. As an Inclusion Teacher, I managed the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for middle school students with diverse learning needs. I conducted academic and behavioral assessments, supervised a team of Education Assistants, and collaborated with teachers to create targeted, evidence-based interventions. Additionally, I implemented the Orton-Gillingham approach with several small groups of students in grades 1 to 3, providing structured literacy support tailored to their individual needs. I am an active member of the Canadian Psychological Association, the Society for the Scientific Study of Reading, and the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. My work reflects a passion for evidence-based practices and a dedication to inclusive education, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
